Giant beavers and wolves of many years ago

The other day I went to the Meshantucket Pequot Indian museum in Connecticut (next to the Foxwoods casino). They had dioramas about Indian life, a recreated village, etc.

The first thing you go through is a recreation of a glacier--feels like you're in "Ice Age"! Then they show some now extinct animals--like a giant beaver...that is, one about the size of a black bear! Next to this pretty realistic model is a group of wolves (dire wolves, I think they're called) that seem at least 5 or 6 feet long. And while there was no model of one, it did mention the sloths of old (hi Slothpuck!) that were much bigger than people are today. These animals died out because of changes in climate, lack of food, etc

Also they showed a diorama of Indians during the winter, huddled in a cave...and they wore fur for warmth. The wife/mother
had more that a few raccoon skins. Imagine what a tough time they would had hunting MACRO furs for their skins, eh!
