While I like the general concept of giganti.ca as described and I'll be checking it out, a quick observation: either you encourage comments or you don't. If you want people to write "better" comments, do it by example.

I don't have any problem with the idea of active moderation -- in fact, I think it's really required for the best levels of community and participation. But the whole point of active moderation is to foster an environment where people feel welcome, and to a large degree, that means a place where they're not afraid they're going to get chewed out for posting something that somebody else thinks is stupid. Discouraging people from posting the genuinely stupid is also important, but it's not only harder, it's probably a little less important: it'll mostly happen naturally, if the friendly, low-troll space is provided.

Just an observation.

All valid points. I've been chatting it over with the other mods, and we are probably going to tone down a lot of that language--we're finding, as you've noticed, that it looked better on paper than in practice. We will still absolutely encourage folks to make helpful, informative posts, but it is a silly thing to try to make manditory.

Also, I apologize if I've come off as mean or impatient with anyone in the past week or so. I've been working twelve-hour days lately, and it seems it's starting to get to me. Sorry!

So, because someone else said it, the points become valid?

Huh. :)
Don't mind me, I'm just killing time until I die in the most amusing way possible.

No, because I was grumpy and tired, I didn't give those points the attention they deserved :P

Locked out? That's unusual. What sort of message are you getting when you try to log in?

I went in and activated your account administratively, although it was already showing you as properly activated. Please let me know more about what happened to I can address this issue; hopefully it isn't affecting other members.

Has anyone else had connection difficulties, by the way? I was able to resolve SXG's problem, but I want to be absolutely certain about this kind of thing.

By the way, I've just posted an update to our rules which will hopefully resolve some of the grievances people have mentioned. We're trying to be a little more friendly about this stuff Image
